If a printer is going to produce high-quality prints consistently, then one key part of the printer that has to sustain high temperatures (2000°) and high pressures (200 psi) to achieve this result is called “Fusers.” The fuser functions to permanently adhere toner (which is a powder) to the media (which is typically paper) by using heat to melt the toner and using pressure to push the melted toner into the media. When this process has completed, the toner is free from smearing, and all pages are produced cleanly.
Unfortunately, because of the massive wear and tear the fuser experiences, it will not last indefinitely, and at some point, it will fail.
For over 10 years, the experts at HonHai Technology have been helping customers identify when the fuser may exhibit symptoms of impending failure—before they develop into a serious, complex issue or result in expensive downtime.
Below are 5 indications that the fuser unit may be nearing the end of its working life:
There are consistent paper jams near the output tray.
When paper jams start consistently at the point at which a sheet is exiting the printer, the fuser rollers have either been damaged or worn out. At this point, the toner is falling off the fuser rollers, and the fuser is stripping the toner from the fuser rollers with no pressure to force the toner into the sheet.
The toner tends to smear or rub off easily.
If the toner rubs off or smears easily from a page, then the fuser is having issues. When the fuser is operating properly, the fuser rolls heat up the rollers, and the rollers create sufficient pressure on the paper while it is going through the fuser, bonding the toner to the paper. Unfortunately, when the fuser is wearing out (or is completely worn out), the fuser is unable to create sufficient heat and/or pressure to properly bond the toner to the paper.
Wrinkled or creased paper or copies.
Wrinkles or creases on paper or copies can also be a sign that a fuser unit is failing. As part of your regular printer maintenance, you must keep an eye on the roller wear on the machine. If they wear unevenly, the printouts will start to become crooked, leaving you with an unusable printer.
Noisy Printers Will Ruin Your Printer
When you hear your printer making strange noises, there is a good chance it will cost you money to fix, and it might even stop working altogether. When you hear the grinding sound from your printer, there is a good chance that the printer has an internal part worn out or broken. The most likely cause of the noise from inside your printer, coming from a fuser, is because of gear or roller wear from continued use.
Error Messages = Unusable Printer
Fuser or maintenance error messages indicate that your printer has a monitor built inside of it. If the internal fuser has hit its limit, it is giving you an alert that it could fail soon.
Recognizing and addressing these issues early can help prevent unexpected printer downtime; they will help reduce your maintenance costs, and will allow you to have consistent performance out of your printer.
