Common Developer Unit Problems and Maintenance Tips

Developer Unit - In modern copiers and laser printers, keeping the developer unit clean and in good repair is critical to stable image quality and smooth reproduction of toner on the page. As one of the more important printer spare parts inside the entire imaging system, service and upkeep of the developer unit can directly affect the density of a print, the cleanliness of the background, and result in a poor print overall. Not only may print be miserable, but the lifespan of other important printer parts, such as the OPC drum, toner cartridge, and fuser, can be greatly reduced.
Common Developer Unit Problems
Uneven Print Density
You may be familiar with the occurrence of white lines across the page that can indicate a dirty OPC drum. The same is true with the developer unit. If toner inside the developer is contaminated or unevenly distributed, the density of the print may change across the page.
Background Shadow – Gray Pages
In effect, the developer unit still has some toner in it when the tray appears empty. If the printer creates gray backgrounds on a page, it’s more common in high-volume printing machines, where maintenance is not as regular.
Toner Leakage
The developer roller must be adequately sealed to avoid serious leaks inside the copier itself. A wayward drop of toner can contaminate copier consumables and close printer parts.
Strange Noise
A gear out of whack, or something inside that just doesn’t quite go snap. Ignoring such a noise can bring you down sooner than you think.
Developer Unit Lifetime Reduction
High-volume printing wear and tear of the soft parts that attract toner sends some developers on a wild ride, especially if the toner powder is of poor quality. Mix duration of use with a bit of neglect, and you’ve got trouble brewing.
Tips on Developer Unit Maintenance
Don’t let excess get inside – Clean out the developer unit regularly. Use good toner cartridges and otherwise protect the developer roller. Ensure the printer gets a proper range of other compatible printer parts
When print deteriorates, check the developer unit and OPC drum and drum cleaning blade together, as a whole, rather than leaving unturned stones. For high-volume in-house and copy shop operations, scheduled maintenance will keep your laser printing on the ball.
